Find an American Staffordshire Puppy (Breeders by State)

Finding an American Staffordshire Terrier puppy is a real challenge. I can’t count the number of times people have asked me for advice. Therefore, I have created this resource for you. You will find the best ways to buy an American Staffordshire Terrier puppy and a list of breeders for each of the 50 states.

You should only buy a dog from a responsible and caring breeder and avoid puppy mills or unreliable backyard breeders, no matter how long the process can be. Otherwise, you increase your chances of getting an unhealthy or problematic dog. It is better to visit the kennel, ask questions about the breeding process, and interact with the puppy. A veterinarian should have seen the puppy and its mom before your visit.

At the end of the article, I have added a few tips to help you find the perfect puppy and get ready to welcome your new pet home.

10 ways to find an American Staffordshire Terrier puppy to buy near you

  1. AKC Marketplace
  2. AKC breeders
  3. UKC breeders
  4. CKC breeders
  5. Good Dog breeders
  6. PuppySpot
  7. NextDayPets
  8. PuppyFind
  9. PuppyFinder
  10. Local breeders

I understand that many families are exclusively looking for a puppy to buy. It can make a lot of sense if you want your future pet to get used to their future environment from a very young age. And also, let’s be honest, although they are way more work in the first months, puppies are adorable!

AKC Marketplace

The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the most famous kennel club in the US. The AKC Marketplace is their online puppy ads service. You will find available puppies and even puppies about to be born bred by AKC registered breeders only. Although puppies found here are a bit pricier than the average, there is a better chance that AKC registered breeders will take great care of their dogs and puppies. And it’s also the best place to go if you want a purebred dog (whether you want your pet to be registered or not).

Creating an alert to get a notification when new American Staffordshire Terrier puppies become available is also possible.

See if any American Staffordshire Terrier puppies are available on the AKC Marketplace now (you will be redirected to the American Staffordshire Terrier page on their website).

American Kennel Club breeders

Not every AKC registered breeder will use the AKC marketplace to sell their puppies. If you want to be proactive and increase your chances of getting a puppy, you can go on the American Staffordshire Terrier breeder directory and contact breeders in your area. You will be able to find out if they have available puppies or if you can put your name on the waiting list for the next litter.

Here is the link to the breeder directory of The Staffordshire Terrier Club of America.

United Kennel Club breeders

The United Kennel Club (UKC) is the second most popular kennel club in the US. The AKC is more focused on conformation to breed standards, whereas the UKC is more performance-oriented. On their website, there is a tool where you can search for breeders that have litters or have previously registered litters. Additionally, it’s possible to search by breed and state.

Find UKC American Staffordshire Terrier breeders (you will be redirected to the UKC breeder search engine).

Canadian Kennel Club breeders

If you live in Canada or are willing to travel there to get your puppy, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is a good resource. Although they do not have a marketplace like the American Kennel Club, you will find a breeder directory with contact information.

Here is the link to the American Staffordshire Terrier breeder directory of the Canadian Kennel Club. You will also find the name of the national club and a link to its website (if available). It’s worth examining if they advertise puppies for sale or have another breeder directory.

Good Dog breeder directory

You can also look for a breeder near you on the Good Dog breeder directory. To be listed on the Good Dog website, breeders must undergo an in-depth screening focusing on breeding practices and environment, the physical and mental health of the dogs and puppies, and their selling policies.

It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your research, but it’s already a step in the right direction.

Online Marketplaces

It is possible to find puppies for sale on specialized websites. It is a very convenient solution, and some reputable (and even AKC registered) breeders use these online marketplaces to sell their puppies. But it is essential to be aware that they are also a tool used by many puppy mills and backyard breeders to sell their dogs. Even scammers pretend to have puppies to sell but disappear after receiving a deposit from potential buyers. Therefore, I recommend you read the next section of this article explaining how to differentiate a reputable breeder from a bad one.

Out of the following websites, PuppySpot seems to be the most proactive when it comes to working exclusively with responsible breeders. They promise they don’t associate with puppy mills by screening all the breeders and accepting less than 10% of applicants. They also require a health check for every puppy sold through their platform and provide new parents with a special AKC registration package. This collaboration with the American Kennel Club signifies that PuppySpot is serious about breeding standards and dogs’ well-being.

The breeder screening process isn’t as strict for the puppy ads sites below. However, even if they could be trying their best to vet sellers and have honest and reputable breeders on their platform, you must ensure you are dealing with one.

Some very obvious red flags should be a very low price, a seller being okay with you taking a puppy under eight weeks old home, the recommendation to get the puppy shipped to you, the impossibility to visit the kennel and meet with the breeder in person, a lack of transparency or knowledge about the breed. So before deciding to get your puppy from one of these websites, please read the next section to be sure to buy from a good, loving, reputable breeder.

Some of these websites will allow you to add an alert to be notified when new puppies are available.

Local breeders

Finally, you could always search for local breeders not registered with any kennel club. If none of the previous solutions have worked, it could be worth doing this quick Google search.

American Staffordshire Terrier Breeders in the US

The following directory is meant to help you find your dream puppy. But the breeders of these pages haven’t been vetted by our team. Therefore, their presence here does not guarantee the quality of their breeding process. Read the last section of the article regarding how to tell if a breeder is trustworthy.

How to find reputable American Staffordshire Terrier breeders?

Getting your dog from a reputable breeder and avoiding puppy mills and greedy backyard breeders at all costs is essential. Although very low prices should always be a huge red flag, even the most expensive puppies could come from bad sellers, and price only is not a sign of quality. Breeders registered with a kennel club tend to be more serious, but again, it is not enough to decide whether a breeder is trustworthy or not. Along the same lines, an unregistered breeder could be excellent.

Here are the characteristics of good breeders:

Small scale operations

  • Usually, only sell one or two breeds, don’t have puppies available all the time, and have experience.
  • Raise puppies in their home since birth and show love toward their dogs.
  • Make sure puppies are handled by different people to be comfortable with humans.
  • Knowledgeable about the breed (temperament, health, nutrition, grooming, etc.), answer your questions.

Transparency

  • Encourage you to meet them, visit their kennel (which should be clean and spacious), and see the breeding dogs and puppies (which should be kept clean, warm, and well-fed). Good breeders only sell puppies to people they have met in person.
  • Willing to share information about their breeding process. Good breeders don’t start breeding dogs under 18 months old and usually stop after 3 to 6 litters.
  • They will ask you to pick up the puppy at the kennel or bring it to you themselves (serious breeders will never ship their puppies or refuse access to the kennel).
  • Will make sure you will be a good fit for their dog (usually by making you fill out a questionnaire) and will most likely make you sign a contract spelling out your responsibilities (usually to spay/neuter and sometimes train the dog).

Healthcare

  • Screen their breeding dogs for genetic disorders and keep their vaccine and preventive healthcare up to date (should be able to provide proof, like health certificates, test results, etc.).
  • Take puppies to the vet first in the first weeks (and can prove it).
  • Don’t let puppies less than eight weeks old leave their mother.

For American Staffordshire Terrier breeding dogs, the AKC national breed club recommends the following health tests: hip evaluation, cardiac exam, thyroid evaluation, NCL DNA Test, and ophthalmologist evaluation. Ask your breeder for test results.

Check the medical section of our American Staffordshire Terrier article to know more about the most common health issues for this breed and the potential cost, according to Dr. Brooks, DVM.

Guarantee

  • Reputable breeders will be able to provide references from previous buyers.
  • Will keep answering your questions and help after the sale if needed.
  • Will take the dog back at any time and provide a guarantee (usually for health and temperament).

Sellers to avoid

Finally, I would strongly advise against buying a puppy on Craigslist, Hoobly, or similar websites, and even in pet stores (unless they have partnered with a shelter and offer dogs for adoption). The likelihood that dogs you will find there are coming from puppy mills is very high. It supports a very inhuman system and increases the chance of your puppy developing expensive health issues and significant behavioral problems in the future.

The cost of an American Staffordshire Terrier

On average, an American Staffordshire Terrier puppy will cost $750 in the USA. Most puppies can be found for between $250 and $1,500. The price will vary depending on the breeder and location and the dog’s bloodline, color, and age, among other things. It is also possible to adopt one for $50 to $500.

The average cost of owning an American Staffordshire Terrier is $22,795 (usually between $11,370 and $35,310) throughout the dog’s lifetime. This accounts for the cost of the dog itself, supplies, food, grooming, training, and preventive healthcare. It could be more expensive if you need regular services such as dog walking or dog boarding.

To know more, check our article on the cost of owning an American Staffordshire Terrier. You will find all the information on supplies, food, preventive healthcare, training, grooming, and tips from pet professionals (veterinarian, trainer, groomer). We also have a cost calculator that you can play with to establish your dog budget.

Why do puppy prices vary for the same breed?

There can be a significant price difference between puppies. Many factors can explain this:

  • Purebreds are more expensive than mixed breeds (except for a few designer breeds).
  • A show-quality puppy coming from a prestigious bloodline could be 10 to 100 times more expensive than the average dog of the same breed.
  • A puppy’s coat color and markings will also influence the price, depending on their popularity.
  • Some expenses that a breeder can defray will also reflect in the price: health screening and other medical costs, microchip, training and socialization, and registration papers.
  • Some breeds are very popular in some areas and less in others.
  • Age is also a factor. On average, a puppy between 2 and 4 months old will be 4% less expensive than a newborn to a 2-month-old puppy. And a puppy between 4 and 6 months old will be 8% cheaper on average. On the other hand, buying an unborn puppy from a coming litter (usually from registered breeders) is likely to cost 28% more!

How hard is it to find an American Staffordshire Terrier puppy?

We have reviewed nearly 50,000 puppy ads from various sources to estimate the price of puppies in the US (for over 150 breeds). Unfortunately, American Staffordshire Terrier puppies were very hard to find during our research.

In fact, on average, we were able to find around 320 puppies per breed, but only 43 American Staffordshire Terrier puppies.

Five tips for finding a cheaper American Staffordshire Terrier puppy

  • Adoption. By investing a little time in visiting shelter websites regularly, there is a chance that you will be able to find a puppy to adopt. They are rare and get adopted quickly, but it is a realistic option. Not only is it cheaper, but it is also a great thing to do.
  • Older puppies. Most people are willing to buy their dog as young as possible, creating excellent opportunities to find puppies a few months old for a much lower price. A 6-month-old dog will still be adorable and playful and should be cheaper than an eight-week-old one.
  • Other locations/states. Some breeds are more expensive in specific locations because of their characteristics and the cost of operating a breeding business there. Looking at prices in different places is a great way to save a lot, providing you are willing to travel to meet the breeder and your future dog.
  • Mixed-breed or purebred. Mixed breed dogs tend to be less expensive to buy than purebreds. This is especially true for purebreds with registration papers (pedigree). Most families are just looking for a pet to spend time with and do not need these registration papers.
  • Friends and family. Let everyone around you know that you are looking for a dog. You might get a good surprise and learn that someone trustworthy has a pregnant dog and is looking for people to get the pups.

Get ready to welcome your American Staffordshire Terrier puppy

You should consider taking a few steps before welcoming a puppy home. You can learn more about this in our new dog owner guide.

  1. Educate yourself on dogs. You can watch YouTube videos, read a book, listen to an audiobook, or even talk to pet professionals in your area. Most groomers, dog walkers, and dog trainers will gladly share their knowledge if they see a potential client in you. Vets are usually very busy, but it’s worth a shot.
  2. Puppy-proof your home. Puppies are curious and could put themselves in a dangerous situation even in their home. Remove plants, food, household or chemical products, medication, and anything a puppy could chew or swallow from low surfaces. Secure exposed wires, hanging fabrics, and your yard.
  3. Get dog supplies. Find out more about essential dog supplies and tips to select the right ones for you and your dog.
  4. Find a vet. You don’t want to wait for your puppy to arrive to find a veterinarian. Some vet clinics are so busy that they do not accept new dogs. On top of that, you want to feel comfortable with the clinic staff and ensure the services suit your needs.
  5. Decide whether you want dog insurance or not. We have a quick guide to help you decide if pet insurance is for you or not.
  6. Choose and buy some dog food. There are so many options for dog food that it can be overwhelming initially. Ask for the breeder’s recommendation or your veterinarian’s if you have already selected a clinic.
  7. Find a dog trainer. It is highly recommended to hire a dog trainer to increase your chances of getting a well-behaved and happy dog. Read this article for tips about dog training and finding a good trainer.
  8. Find a dog walker or doggy daycare (optional). Most dogs, especially puppies, won’t do well if they stay alone inside for more than a few hours. If this is the case for your dog, find a good dog walker or doggy daycare.
  9. How about a bit of time off? If possible, take a week or two off work to spend more time with your puppy in the first days. It will make the transition easier for them and will be an excellent opportunity to work on potty training, house manners, and basic commands.
