Cheapest & Most Expensive Puppies: 60 Popular Breeds Ranked

Getting a new dog is an exciting adventure. Most people want to buy or adopt a puppy for many reasons: to increase the chances that it will adapt to its new environment easily, to spend more years in its company, and let’s be honest because pups are so cute! But one of the first questions anybody should ask themselves is how much their favorite breed is going to cost. Lucky for you, after reviewing thousands of puppy ads from all over the US, we have established a cost ranking of the 60 most popular dog breeds from cheapest to most expensive.

The price ranges introduced in this article exclude the 10% most, and least expensive ads reviewed to ignore pricing mistakes and show-quality dogs that are much more expensive and are not what most future dog owners are looking for. The range represents 80% of the puppies (newborn to 6-month-old) found, which gives a precise and trustworthy idea of the prices in the US.

Why are some puppies more expensive than others?

There are many reasons why some breeds are more expensive than others and why prices vary for puppies of the same breed. Here are the main ones:

  • Breed popularity. Most popular breeds tend to be more expensive. It is especially true when considering local prices. For example, smaller dogs will be more popular and expensive in metropolitan areas. The same logic applies to bigger ones in the countryside.
  • Purebred vs. mixed breed. Mixed breed puppies are generally less expensive than purebreds.
  • Bloodline. If the puppy’s parents are show-quality dogs, the puppy price will be a lot higher. Some puppies will also be registered with a kennel club, adding to the breeder’s expenses. Most pet owners do not need papers/pedigree.
  • Breeder. A serious breeder will invest more in the well-being of his dogs. His expenses (medical, food, supplies, etc.) will be higher, reflecting on puppy prices.
  • Health screenings. Some puppies will have seen a veterinarian for an exam, deworming, vaccines, and/or microchip implantation before being sold.
  • Breed-specific needs. Certain breeds are more likely to require medical expenses to ensure a safe reproduction (c-section, for example) or to stay healthy and, therefore, more expensive to breed.
  • Coat color. Rare colors and colors approved by kennel clubs will usually be pricier.
  • Age. Older puppies are less expensive than younger ones as most people want to buy their dog as young as possible.

Adopting is a great option

There are many reasons to adopt a dog instead of buying one. We invite our readers to check a fascinating article about the subject by clicking on The Humane Society link below.

Not only adopting save lives as hundreds of thousands of adoptable pets are put to sleep every year in the US because shelters don’t have enough space to keep them; it is also a great way to fight against puppy mills who breed puppies in deplorable conditions. Welcoming an abandoned animal is also a very gratifying experience, and chances are this dog or puppy will already be potty trained and comfortable in a family setting. Finally, adopting is amazingly easy and less pricey than buying.

When buying a dog, always make sure that you get your pet from a serious and responsible breeder. It might be a bit more expensive, but you will drastically decrease the chances of getting an unhealthy or behaviorally troubled dog.
